Intro to the Ptolus Campaign Empty Intro to the Ptolus Campaign

Post  Maltavious Thu Nov 24, 2011 2:09 am

This campaign will be taking place in Ptolus. Ptolus is a metropolis in the Tarsis Empire. Even though Ptolus is not the capital it is considered the most influential and most interesting city in the empire. I’m going to provide the most current history to set the stage for the game but for more detailed information feel free to download the free Ptolus players handbook. (The link will be at the bottom.)

With the death of the last king, Delian Von Tessel, there is no clear heir to the Lion-Guarded Throne. The three current contestants for the throne are Addares XXXIV a distant cousin, Segaci Fellisti an advisor to the last three kings, and Holy Emperor Rehoboth Ylestos the current Lothian religious leader.

Recently the barbarians of the east have begun to stir again. Many of the Tarsis nobles have fled to the safety of the west. Segaci has been able to gain a considerable amount of support by proposing the best plan to combat the barbarian hordes. Rehoboth’s supporters have increased with the idea that the capital should be moved. Addares’s supporters are in serious decline. Her ambivalence towards the barbarian threat has shown many of her supporters that she isn’t serious about running the Lion-Guarded Throne, and lacks the ability to handle the responsibility.

Segaci took this opportunity to make an alliance with the Holy Emperor Rehoboth. Segaci penned the “Articles of Cooperation”. This treaty increases the power of the Holy Emperor in Segaci’s new kingdom. Though the church of Lothian itself was excited about the opportunity, Rehoboth was reluctant to sign the articles. Addares took the news harshly. Her support for the throne disappeared overnight, and so she disappeared taking her fleet of ships and wealth with her the next day.

With Addares out of the way Segaci set his sights on Ptolus itself, and its current ruler Commissar Igor Urnst. It seems to Segaci that the Articles of Cooperation are gaining support and wide scale acceptance in all corners of the empire except in Ptolus. Commissar Igor has ignored the Articles entirely, and refuses to force the Ptolus nobles into signing off on them. Rehoboth is taking this opportunity to give the Commissar a secret alternative. If the Commissar rejects the Articles and allies himself with the Holy Emperor they can remove Segaci and form a stronger empire.

However the Commissar is dealing with local problems, and has little time to deal with the squabbling usurpers of the Lion-Guarded Throne. Menon Balacazar, leader of the most powerful criminal organization in Ptolus, has passed away from old age. Two of his children, Malkeen and Maystra, have been fighting over who should take over in his absence. As the power of the Balacazar crime family wavers Kevris Killraven is taking the opportunity to expand her territory nearly entrenching the whole city in war.

It’s at this very tense, and trying moment that Ptolus is invaded. Eight ships from Addares’s fleet enter the docks of Ptolus carrying a host of monsters, demons, and devils lead by a being calling itself Daegun Ayrtox. Daegun forced his way onto the docks, and declared that he was the son of Ghul and the rightful ruler of Goth Gulgamel
*. He further went on to say that he meant no citizen of Ptolus any harm, and he demanded an audience with Commissar to discuss peacefully surrendering Goth Gulgamel to him.

Unable to contain their fury the many paladins, worshippers of good gods rushed the docks. Steron Vsool, largely considered the most powerful paladin in Ptolus, took the lead and charged up to the first ship, but was cut off by a woman, and a Marilith. The woman was Addares and was no surprise to Steron. The Marilith, however, stopped Steron dead in his tracks. Everything he knew about demons told him it should be evil and repulsed by his magic, but this Marilith was different. It was good.

When the game starts it will be just three weeks after this event. At the urging of Addares the Commissar has constructed a compound in the north guildsman district while he decides how best to handle the current situation.

* - Ghul. Creator of Goth Gulgamel, the fortress halfway up the Spire. Also known as the Half God and the Skull-King.

Things a citizen of Ptolus would know about current events:

It seems that the invaders are split into 3 factions. The faction that seems to be lead by a being calling himself Daegun is the leading faction. Rumor has it that one faction is full of “good demons”, and the other faction seems to have very little presence.

Citizens are converting to vigilantism. A group calling itself "The Yellow Hood", because its secretive members all don a yellow hood, has decided that it will strike back at the invaders. So far their crimes are little more then graffiti, and the destruction of a supply cart rumored to be supplying food to the invaders, but officials of Ptolus know that this is the beginning of a very dangerous movement that could incite a war.

High Chancellor Segaci has taken it upon himself to remove valuable troops from the front lines of barbarian war, and move them just outside Ptolus. He's claiming it's a necessary measure due to the gross incompetence of Commander Igor. The number of troops outside Ptolus is still small but more troops arrive everyday.
